Cardiff Aviation Training Limited (CATL) have successfully completed an upgrade to the projector system on the British International Helicopters (BIH) Sikorsky S61N Full Flight Simulator based at the CATL Training Centre, Cardiff Airport. The upgrade was required due to arising obsolescence issues with the previously installed Rockwell-Collins / JVC projector system installed by Rockwell-Collins as part of their Monitor Replacement Projection system, for which spares were no longer available.

The brief to CATL was for a low cost, COTS based, supportable projection solution that guaranteed maintenance of the correct Display System geometry by retaining all of the existing Rockwell-Collins optical assemblies and structures; projector performance was to match or better that of the previously installed system. Practically speaking this required that the specified projectors had to be capable of being fitted into a physically constrained space whilst still allowing for X-Y and Pan and Tilt adjustment to match the projector position to the pre-existing optics; it also required a projector capable of achieving sharp focus at an extremely small throw distance of less than 1000mm.

CATL, with their colleagues at Digital Projection UK, worked to specify and trial potentially suitable projectors meeting the above criteria; these tests were undertaken initially at Digital Projections facilities prior to completing an on-site test installation and evaluation to finalise the specification of the projector and lens combination. Once a suitable specification was established CATL FSTD Engineering personnel undertook all further design, manufacture, installation and integration, and both Customer and CAA sign-offs. In addition to providing the required ongoing supportability the new system has also provided significantly better brightness; the newly installed system has also been provided with a full spares support package.

In addition to offering MCC and JOC training, Simulator Dry and Wet hire, and Simulator Hosting and Operation services, CATL also offers a range of Simulator Support Services to third-party Customers. These services range from spares support, through design and install projects such as the above, through to full turnkey Simulator Relocations in both the UK and Internationally.
